Execute backup job twice but only once with replication

Post by widmerkarl »

Hi guys,

I've got a question regarding the scheduling of jobs. I'm not sure if this can be scheduled via the GUI console, or if i have to do some Windows task scheduling...

At a customer i've got a backup job running every evening, with replication to a second site (source: backup) directly executed after backup job.

Now i want to lower RTPO a little more. So I thought that i might execute the backup job over lunch time, but without the replication.

The reason without replication is because the customer has only a 50MBit synchronous link to the second site. During the day people on this site are working with Remotedesktop Services over this link. So i can't use the full link for replication, and without the full link speed the replication will perhaps collide with the backup and or replication scheduled on evening.

What can i do here?

Thanks for your help!
Best regards,
Karl

You just need to configure the desired schedules for both jobs (am I right that now you're chaining the replication job to be executed right after the backup job is complete?). Having separate schedules (backup twice a day and replication once a day at the required time) will allow to achieve what you're after. Don't be afraid of the job overlap, the second job will wait for the first one to release the VMs.

Hi foggy,

That's correct, the replication is triggered / chained right after the backup job. I know that i can schedule the replication to a specific time, but i didn't do that because the backup job ends not every time at the same time. But with a little spare time i can schedule the replication. Since it runs in the night, it's not so time or bandwith critical.

I'll keep you posted!

thanks!

Karl

Yep, that's what I meant you could do.

Hi,

I think i've got the solution.

I scheduled the replication to a specific time after the backup job.

The backup job i've scheduled to be executed every 8 hours, but with some limitations as shown in the screenshot. With this limitations the backup job will be executed at 12:00 and 21:00, but not in the night when replication runs. This would give some conflicts because new restore points come to repository when replication is already running.

I will try this today and then we will see if it works.

I'll keep you posted.

Looks good.

I don't think it could cause any issues, if replica is already underway.

Checked the backup server with the new scheduling...

The job started as expected at 12:00. Then there was a waiting for about two hours. Waiting for something with no clear reason. It looked as there were some VMs with snapshot issues.

After this two hours the backup itself started and is now actual running.

Will keep you posted this evening. But i'm confident that this new setup will work :)
Best regards,
Karl

Hello folks,

The backup is working as expected. The above scheduling works fine.

Thanks for the hint, foggy!

Karl
