left with server with only snapshots

Post by systeembeheerder »

Hi,
My config: Veeam backup using virtual appliance mode. version 4.1. Backup broke up halfway backup and the vm with veeambackup (vmuniform) on it had 2 disks of the server it was backing up (vmzero) still attached.
I removed the 2 disks of vmzero from vmuniform, but how do i restore the vmzero? If I look at the config, it has 2 disks, snapshots in the Edit Settings window. I want that to be the original disk again. How do I safely restore the original situation?
Tia.

Hi, you just remove those snapshots with vSphere Client.

Hi Gostev,

Ok, so if I remove the snapshots disks of vmzero, I'm left with no disks. Do I reconnect the original disk then?

Hi, I am not sure what you are saying. You should not remove disks, you should remove snapshots (this operation simply commits snapshot data into the disk files).

Ok.

I will try and explain a little better. A backup job with veeam backup did not end correctly. 2 disks of server vmzero where still connected (Hot add) with my veeam backup server. I disconnected those.
Now if I look at server vmzero (Edit Settings in Vsphere) I see disk 1 as vmzero-00002.vmdk. disk2 is vmzero_1-00002.vmdk.
That is not correct, as this should have been vmzero.vmdk and vmzero_1.vmdk.(the ones that where connected to the veeam backup server).
How do I change this back to the original disks?

Hope this is more clear.

Hello Addy,

The disks you see are snapshots, please remove them using vSphere Client as Anton has mentioned and that's it. Your original disks are still presented to vmzero VM.

Hi Vitaliy,

This is not what is happening then. If I remove the disks:
disk1 as vmzero-00002.vmdk.
disk2 is vmzero_1-00002.vmdk.

I am left with a vmzero with no disks.

server is starting, but I still see shapshot files of it, which are not commited back with the snapshot manager.
Even did the trick: make a new snapshot and if it is finished, use delete all. Still the 00002 file stay put and are not commited back to my vmzero.
How to fix this?

Addy,

You may try to use the instructions below:
http://www.veeam.com/forums/viewtopic.p ... t=30#p9504
However, if you have not done this before, it might be better to contact VMware support for assistance with this.

Thanks!

You should not be removing the disks from the VM, you should be removing the snapshots from the VM. Removing snapshots is not done via the VM "Edit Properties" dialog, it's done via the "Snapshot Manager" dialog. If you remove the snapshot with the "Snapshot Manager" dialog then VMware will consolidate the snapshot -delta files back into your main VMDK files and change the config for you.
