New Veeam setup

Post by jonnyuk1133 »

Hi all,

I recently got introduced to Veeam by a friend, we are currently moving to Virtualisation and want to use Veeam for our backup solution.

- The plan is to run around 10 - 15 Virtual servers all on Windows platforms with a total size of 1.5TB using VMware. (2x ESXI hosts and 1 EqualLogic SAN)
- Daily Incremental changes are around 10 - 20GB.
- Our current backup solution is to tape to get data offsite.
- No plans to sync offsite in the next few years.

My design for Veeam was

- Buy a separate server with 6x 2TB (raid 6) and have 8TB available.
- Run Veeam on this new server and use it for a backup repository.
- Use this server as a tape server connecting via SAS to a new LTO5 multi loader.

so my questions:

1. Is there a better way then above for my scenario?
2. is it best to run Veeam virtual or on a separate box?

I must admit, I'm fairly new to the technology, any help would be grateful !

There is nothing wrong with your setup :-).

In regards to your 2nd question, you could make the Veeam server (for the management of the jobs) virtual to benefit from VMware features (HA, DRS) and use the physical server as a backup repository. In this way you are also prepared for any future expansions when you want to add more storage or replace storage without having to reinstall Veeam (even though this goes really fast with our export/import configuration option).

If you can afford it, consider RAID10 for the repository. Some of the transformations that Veeam does runs considerable better on RAID10 vs RAID6.
