File level restore

Hello,
If I understand things correctly, When doing a Object lever restore, either from a windows filesystem or something else you will loose user permission and other special attributes right?
This is due to the fact that we mount the snapshot on the veeam-server rather in the guest right?
When restoring a mssql-database, will I need to dump the files on the veeam-server first as well?

Is there any plan to improve the restore-features so we can do a direct restore into the guest, or is that impossible due to security in vmware? (no other guest are able to fiddle with another?)

(This is veeam version 5 again)

Offtopic question, does veeam 5 support distributed switches?

Hello,

Correct, the Windows permissions are lost because you are not restoring to the same machine but Backup server. However, version 5 adds an option to preserve Linux permissions and ownership (when restoring direct to original Linux host). We are planning to add restore direct into the guest for Windows as well down the road, it is possible as long as you have Local Administrator credentials to the target guest.

v5 has limited support of distributed switches, there are some limitations that will be documented in the Release Notes document.

Regarding the linux-restore, is owner and permissions preserved because you use scp from the appliance
to the target or does it interact through the vmware-api's in some magic way?

If it uses scp, does the virtual appliance need to be on the same vlan as the original linux-guest?

Its neither: we are using our own Linux agent to move files to Linux. SCP is too slow to do the job (that was the reason why we created FastSCP many years ago). But yes, helper appliance needs to be configured to start in the same network, because the restore is done over network connection.

Hi Anton,

when i restore Linux guest files, i've set the option "Preserve permissions and ownership", the permissions of files are correct, but all directories are owned by root with permission "rwxrwxrwx" .

What's going wrong ?
