Veeam iSCSI Design for Primary and Backups Storage

Post by DRUMDUDESAN »

Hi,
I read through some documentation and these links as well.
vmware-vsphere-f24/vmware-frequently-as ... tml#p39944
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/70/ ... _mode.html

We will be using the HotAdd mode(VM) for our Infrastructure. A typical small VMware iSCSI setup.
- 2 x 1GB with 10GbE LAG switches
- Primary VMware Storage 20TB iSCSI 4x1GbE per storage processor
- Secondary Backup Storage 30TB iSCSI 2x1GbE per controller.
- 3 ESXi Hosts in one cluster
- The ESXi Hosts will have access based on VLANs for to both SANs

I was wondering if Veeam had a best practice guide for this design for this type of scenario.
Thanks

Hi Jeff,
we have a Best Practice Guide available, you can read it online here: http://bp.veeam.expert/ or obtain a pdf version to read it offline.
In your case, if the secondary storage is an array and not a server, so that you cannot install Veeam components on it, the two best options are indeed hotadd, but also direct san by routing the iscsi networks inside the ESXi servers where there will be your Veeam proxy(ies). With ethernet storage you can do direct san even with virtual proxies, there is some overhead compared to physical proxies but it's doable, and you can avoid some of the performance issues with hotadd.
