Backup Time for Domain Controllers and more

Post by guidoakd »

Hi everybody,
I have the following 3 questions:

1- Supposing i have only 2 virtual domain controllers, at the time of configuring the job's time of them: wouldn't be dangerous to put de SAME time to backup both? I've noted that the aware-application backup goes into the server and stop services if it's necessary, so.. in this case i assume it would be very important to set different hours.. ¿same day?. In case of restoring.. no matter if i have different backups time between both?

2- Now my infraestructure is formed by 2 virtual and 1 physycal Domain Controllers. In this case shouldn't be a problem because i have de physical-one operating.. is it OK?

3- Just asking. Veeam backups physycal DC's or only Virtual?

Thank you very much.

Hi guidoakd,
1. Backing up DCs at the same time should not cause problems, but you can create separate backup jobs for them if you wish.
2. It`s ok.
3. Veeam Backup and Replication backs up only virtual machines while another Veeam`s product called Endpoint which is free to use backs up physical machines.
Thanks!

Here's also a KB article regarding domain controller recovery, worth reviewing.

Thanks Foggy and Shestakov for the answers!

I have this last question that's making me crazy.. the credentials you configure on the aware-application backup, should be a local administrator on the server where Veeam runs? shoud be a domain administrator of the DC domain i want to backup?
Actually i have 4 different domains, and 2 of them works properly but the others don't and i can't figure ir out why the RPC connection fails. (i'am setting credentials of all domain administrators)
Making an example, my Veeam's server is on domain A, and from there, i'm trying to backup DC's from domains A,B,C and D. A and B work's good, but C and D don't. BUT backup WORKS on machines (making the full backup, not the aware-application) on domain C and D
Do you know of any documentation about the credentials you have to put there?

Thanks very much.

What do you mean by "they don't work", what kind of error message do you get?

RPC's connection fails. I've enabled port 135 (that's the port Veeam uses for RPC connection???) but is still not working. Any suggestion? (I'm trying to backup DC's from other domains, with firewalls in the middle, so i have to enable ports).

Please check whether all the required ports are open.
