Version 9.5 Shared Drive Backed up?

Post by DeanP »

Hello,

I have been seeing in the online video sessions that Veeam Windows Agent in 9.5 will backup shares.
Does anybody know if this is true and what it really means?
Would I be able to backup mapped drives through a Windows server with the Veeam Windows agent 9.5 installed?

Thanks,
DeanP

Hello DeanP,

Your post has been moved to the Veeam Agent for Widows sub-forum. Can you please send us the link where you've heard this statement?

Thank you!

Perhaps I miss read what I saw. Possibly the Shared Folder that I saw in the Agent screen was for a destination.
I can't locate the link but it was part of the Veeam Next Big Thing, Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows breakout session.

Hi DeanP,

Yes, shared destination step might be the reason of this confusion. We will support backup to shared folder (same way as in current version) but backup for mapped drives or shared folders won’t be introduced in the upcoming release.

Thanks for the clarification Dima P.
That's too bad as I know many that would like to backup mapped drives and NDMP support.
I would really like to keep Veeam as my only backup solution instead of having to run two pieces of software to back up all of my data.

Any idea if or when this support may be added?

Thanks,
DeanP

There is no ETA for this FR, but please take a look at the existing topic in the Veeam B&R sub-forum for more info > Back up a CIFS Share

Thanks Vitaliy, unfortunately our NAS shares are too large to do a full file copy everyday (15TB).

Hopefully a solution for all of us needing NDMP or mapped drive incremental backups from Veeam will come soon.

DeanP,

Noted - thanks for the heads up. Any chance you have a tape device? With existing VBR’s file to tape functionality you can backup a shared folder to tape media.

Hi Dima,

Thanks for the idea but unfortunately we do not have tape any longer. We are going directly to tape for everything now.
Does backup to tape of shares allow incremental?

Veeam Backup and Replication supports file to tape jobs (even in Free edition without license) and it allows to write files directly to tape. Incremental backup is supported as well

For anyone interested I've written up a solution that uses a virtual tape library installed on a Veam server to protect a NAS device by using the File to Tape feature. That way you're still backing up to disk so no need to invest in a tape drive/library to get this working.
