Defrag/Compact, Synthetic Full, Health Check, when?

Post by HendersonD »

I have one backup job set to "Defragment and compact full backup file" on the last Saturday of each month
I have a different backup job that has a Synthetic full created every Saturday
Both of these backup jobs are also set for backup health check the last Friday of each month

Two questions related to all three of the jobs I describe above
  1. When exactly on a Friday/Saturday do these jobs start?
  2. Is there anywhere in the Veeam interface where it shows whether these jobs ran fine?

The defrag/compact and health checks don't run separately, they run as part of the job run on that day. If the job starts daily at 8pm and you have a health check scheduled for the last Friday of the month, at the end of the job that started at 8pm on that Friday, the job will run a health check. Keep that in mind, if you have a job that starts after 12am, if you schedule the health check for Fridays, it will run on Friday in the morning potentially into the work day.

My backup jobs start at 11pm and are linked. All of them are done by 12:30am or so. Not sure how long the defrag/compact takes so I am assuming that I will not run into the workday

What about the synthetic full?

Is there any type of logging/reporting done on how these jobs ran?

Same applies to the synthetic full. They are logged/reported as part of the normal backup job, they are not separate. You'll see them at the end of the list of steps the job executed. If a health check or similar fails on that day, then the job itself will report as failed.

Hi everyone, in my case, we have v8 version, we are planning to migrate to v9/v9.5 next year.
Recently we noted that the time of backups has been increased each day a bit.
We have configured Reverse incremental, and we suspect that may be the full files are too fragmented.

So we try to defragment/compact but dont have that option on v8, what could we do instead?

thanks in advance

@Marco:
You could perform a manual one-time active full, if you have enough disc space.
Alternatively, speed-up the upgrade to v9.5.
