We started to use Veeam Endpoint Backup some weeks ago. At first ist was surprising, how quickly backups are possible (earlier used Acronis neede 3 times as much time) and how reliable they worked (we had lots of errors when backing up with Acronis). With Veeam it was even possible to schedule incremental backups at nigth via WLAN daily (until now with Acronis this was far too slow, we had to start backups manually, after connecting via LAN).

However, we ran into problems with Veeam, when it started to merge the complete backup with incremental backups. The duration of the incremental backups increased up to more than 7 hours occasionally (not always) and backups nearly always were interrupted after an error message regarding a broken connection to the backup medium. Because of the duration of the backaups and backup retrials, backups are not finished in the morning and need lot of network traffic, which makes daily work impossible and the user cannot cancel the backup jobs (after pressing "cancel" Veeam stays in status "canceling" but does not stop its network traffic, the only way is to finish the Veeam task via task manager which is a bit to sophisticated for end users).

So we will aim to return to manual backups via LAN connection (however with Veeam instead of Acronis) and we will make Full backups only (they are more reliable than incremental backups with backup-merges) and I will write a script to throw away old backups automatically when a new one is generated.

So, Veeam is a better solution for us, than we had before, because backups are quicker and more reliable as long as no backup merges are necessary. However, incremental backups with backup merges don't work as we would need it.

Yeah, backup merges can be incredibly slow. It would be great if there were more options for when it should create what kind of backup...

We will add the backup to cloud connect repository in the upcoming release. It should solve the issues caused by connection over the slow links. By the way, you can request a special regkey to set a smaller backup block size (it can help with the performance while backing up over WAN).

I will write a script to throw away old backups automatically when a new one is generated.

You can use a standalone backup option for this purpose
