SureBackup or periodic full?

Post by HendersonD »

We are new to Veeam, getting it setup about 5 weeks ago. The product is working quite well for backup and replication. We want to ensure that if we do have to do a restore, it will work. This is especially important in light of the Change Block Tracking (CBT) issues that VMware has had over the past year or so that can render a backup nearly useless. We are using forever forward incremental and am wondering whether to use SureBackup or just schedule a full backup every 2-3 weeks.

I have looked at the following documentation/guides to SureBackup and there seems to be some heavy lifting involved in getting this setup
https://www.veeam.com/kb1912
http://www.mirazon.com/backups-worthles ... urebackup/
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/vsp ... ation.html

Is SureBackup worth the effort to get setup or am I better off going the route of a full backup every few weeks?
For the folks who use SureBackup, do you check all of your VMs or just some? How often do you run a SecureBackup job?

Why not consider using both?
Active Fulls will indeed help you battle unknown VMware CBT bugs, but it does not promise your backups will be consistent or recoverable.

Using SureBackup allows you to perform application level restore testing automatically, allowing you a piece of mind.
