Best practice restore from 2 VMDK to 1 VMDK

Post by wayne7215 »

Hi guys

We have a few file servers with spanned NTFS Volumes over 2 VMDK disks, because of the old 2TB limitations in vSphere 5.1. We are currently on vSphere 6 and would like to replace the 2 VMDK disk, each 1.9TB, with the spanned volume with an new 3TB VMDK disk. The question now is how could help us Veeam in this process?

If we would use the restore "Guest files (Windows)" procedure, I guess we would loose all the Win2012R2 dedup space and instead of 2.2TB we would have a new volume with 3.9TB on the new disk. So how can we restore the data of those 2 VMDK disk with the spanned volume on a block level so we could keep the Dedup ratio for the Volume?

Any recommendations?

Thx

I doubt it's possible as Windows Deduplication doesn't work on the fly. So, you have to wait until written (in this case restored data) gets deduplicated. Thanks.
