Proxy requirements for VMs with deduplicated volumes

Post by mxx »

Hi,

the system requirements only state, that if Windows deduplication is used on some volumes, the Veeam B&R Console and mount server should be installed on a Windows Server capable of the same deduplication technology.

But what about backup proxies or repos?
It seems obvious, but I'd like to confirm, that a backup proxy running on Windows 10 wouldn't be able to backup deduplicated volumes in hotadd mode.
Is that correct?

Thank you!

Kind regards,
Max

Hi Max, it is not correct, since backup is performed on a block-level and proxy basically doesn't care what's inside the guest OS (think Windows proxy backing up Linux VMs). The requirement you're mentioning relates to restore, where we actually need to be able to "understand" the file system.

Thanks a lot foggy!
So even if we use file exclusions it would work since this is run on the guest being backed up and not on the proxy itself?

And for the backup repo it would work as well as long as the mount server was installed on a different host, a Windows Server with data deduplication turned on?

Yes, now you're totally correct on both points.
