Slow Tape Performance

Hello Guys.

I was wondering if someone could help me understand why our backup job going to tape is very slow.

Now our environment is setup with a Physical Veeam server and Proxy. From what I understand our Proxy is also our tape server and it is connected directly to our LTO6 tape drive via iSCSI. Now the connection between our proxy and the backup repositories is done by a 10GB fiber connection.

Therefore, I am not sure as to why It takes us about 12 hours to backup a 1.2TB server to tape and the processing rate for the job is about 30 MB/s.

Is that file to tape or backup to tape job?
In a case of file to tape, how many files are being copied to the tapes?

It's a backup to tape job. The speed that we are seeing is not something that we would expect as I would believe it could be faster.

Indeed the speed is quite low for backup job on LTO-6. I would recommend to contact Veeam support for the troubleshooting.

Are your backup files by chance de-duped? I max out at about 30MB/sec on tape jobs on LTO-5 where the source files are deduped (Server 2012R2 repo).

Can you calrify how you repository is configured? Is that a windows repo, CIFS share? Tape proxy is connected to the repository via iSCSI, is that correct?

Sorry for late reply but we ended up figuring out that our NAS device was our bottle neck. We had an exact spare unit, but with a higher performance drive and they made a huge difference in terms of the rate going to tape.

Glad the issue is found and resolved. By the way, The latest product version, VBR v9.5 was released last week and it has file to tape performance improved drastically.
