Backup MS W2012 R2 cluster on vmware 5.5

Post by BCDITIS »

Hi All,

I would like to build On VMware 5.5 or 6 a MS W2012 R2 Clustered server using FC SAN or iSCSI.
What would be the best possible way to backup this With Veeam Backup and replication?

Thanks,

Benny

Hi,

Are you going to provide W2012 VMs with a direct access to the storage or you want to setup a shared volume residing on a vmdk?

Thanks

The former is not posssible since you cannot take a snapshot of a VM that uses RDM or DirectPath IO. You should place a shared vmdk volume atop of a vmfs filesystem then you can take a snapshot if the VM. Another question - do you plan to utilize multiple ESXi hosts or just one?

Thanks

Thanks again for the clarification. Yes Multiple ESXI hosts is the plan.

If I correctly understod what you're trying to achieve then, according to this VMware 5.5 guide, shared vmdk is not an option. You'll need to use either RDM mode (recommended) which does not let you to take snapshots or vRDM mode.

Thanks
