Veeam BMO365 & Veeam B&R 9.5 co-existence

Post by Lewpy »

Now that Veeam B&R v9.5 is GA [yay! :D], can we install the current RC build of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 on a Veeam B&R 9.5 server, or do we need to wait for a new RC build that supports co-existence? My understanding was that previously the Explorer for Exchange was different in each product, so hopefully they are now aligned?

Lewis,

Yes, the version of the Veeam explorer is 9.5.0.823 which is the same version as the GA explorer version so you should be able to install them on the same server

does this mean if we have a updated b&r 9. installed on a same with veeam explorer for exchange installed, we need to install it once again from the office 365 setup files?
I get an error "Veeam Exlporer for Exchange is not installed on this computer" when i try to restore in office 365 veeam EVEN it for sure is installed with 9.5 :)

Frank,

Just to be clear. You have a server which has B&R 9.5 installed. On that same server you have VBO GA installed (but you haven't installed the VEX again...). When going into O365, you get that message? Is that correct?

Frank,

I need to verify a few things for this. I am actually running it separately (I back up my VM with O365 through B&R to comply with the 3-2-1 rule.)

I will get back to you as soon as possbile

Frank,

I verified and your scenario should work. (but again, why install VBO on the B&R server, it is like installing Exchange on the VBR server. Don't forget that you are running a jetblue DB in the backend for this service).

Can you log a support call and keep us informed?

Thanks

Hi Mike, thanks for your reply.
As most of our SMB customers only have 1 server, we mostly install the VBR on the hyper-v host. the customers have 1-4 VMS running of that host.
This has been working very nice for years (backuping up to a USB3 drive and cloud backup).

where else should we install the office 365 backup?

Frank,

We normally advise it to be installed on a VM. That means that VM can also be protected with B&R and then be stored on a USB device (as a whole VM) or the cloud backup. Advantage of doing this is that you can recover from within the B&R console also. For example, when you have the VM as a backup, and for some reason the O365 server is damaged or whatever, then you can still restore from the B&R repository, and we will even recognize that it is a O365 server and immediately give you the option to use VEX on that one.

But again, as said. It is a supported scenario to have them both on one server, and if you have that issue above, I would ask you to work with support to figure out what is wrong

Hope my explanation makes sense
Cheers

Cool, that sounds really good and we would use that as a preferred solution for most of our customers. Very nice that VBR will detect that the VM is hosting O365 backupenginge direct from console.

But for our smallest customers (with just 1-2 VM) I think we would like to have the consoles direfctly at the hyper-v host (not sure why I want this htough.. probably old school thinking..)
So as long this is supported I will log a case to check what might cause this and see if their is an easy fix for this.

Thanks.

I can't think of a reason why it should not be supported so please go ahead and log a support case.
