Storage Snapshot Backup
Hi,
when I define a Backup Job to use storage snapshot as backup mode, do all VM disks have to be on a storage that's capable of using storage snapshots or can I have a mixed configuration where the VM has also disks from a non storage snapshot storage?
Does Veeam back up the sorage snapshot disks with storage snapshot and the other with for example hotadd or does it simply switch to hotadd or another transport mode (whatever is configured)?
Thanks a lot,
Best regards,

Re: Storage Snapshot Backup
Hi Jürgen,
Thanks!
All VM disks have to be on the storage snapshot. In the mixed scenario, backup job will failover to other processing modes. Please take a look at this page for more info > Backup from Primary Storage Arraysmix wrote:when I define a Backup Job to use storage snapshot as backup mode, do all VM disks have to be on a storage that's capable of using storage snapshots or can I have a mixed configuration where the VM has also disks from a non storage snapshot storage?
If storage snapshot mode is not available, backup job will try other modes one by one.mix wrote:Does Veeam back up the sorage snapshot disks with storage snapshot and the other with for example hotadd or does it simply switch to hotadd or another transport mode (whatever is configured)?

Re: Storage Snapshot Backup
For Backup from Storage Snapshots, the VM disks can be on different storage that supports Storage SnapShots.
If you want to do "SnapShot only" backups and use Veeam Explorer from Storage SnapShots with NetApp or Nimble all VMs disks of same VM need to be on same datastore.

Re: Storage Snapshot Backup
ok, so in order to use "Shapshot only" all VM disks have to be on the same datastore or is it enough that they are on the same storage?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Storage Snapshot Backup
It is enough that they are located on the same storage. Veeam backup will create storage snapshots for all LUNs and then mount them to the proxy server.

Re: Storage Snapshot Backup
There are 2 different type of Storage Integrations:
1) Backup from Storage SnapShot:
There you snapshot the Storage and read out backups with a Proxy and Store them as Backup Files on the Repository.
The rule is here that you need all VM disks on the storage that support storage snapshots in any datastore you like.
2) SnapShot only processing.
With snapshot only proccessing you can keep StorageSnapShots after the job and replicate data to a secondary storage (like NetApp SnapVault/SnapMirror).
So whenever you want to restore a VM directly out of a SnapShot (and not from a backup file create with storage snapshots) then all VM disks of the same VM needs to be on the same datastore.
This will maybe change over time as there is a feature request.

Re: Storage Snapshot Backup
Here is UG link for more information on "Snapshot jobs" > Snapshot Jobs (NetApp and Nimble) (though I'm pretty sure you've been asking for scenario 1).
