Way to find the right SQL database in Veeam?

Post by denit »

Is there a way to find the right underlying database that Veeam uses?

I want to make a backup of the configuration database before i upgrade from version 9 to 9.5
However, i run into the issue that i cannot discover which database is actually the configuration database.
We run SQL2008 R2 and there are more databases that contain the name "veeam".

I have made exports of the ones i can find in the SQL manegement studio and the containing data does not match the backupjobs.

In short, it seems like there is some database hidden somewhere outside of the management studio (or instance) that i am using.

The only alternative i can think of now is to make a complete clone of the veeamserver prior to upgrading it.

I may have found an answer, the registry.

Currently im looking into that, to find the active database used by Veeam.

I found the database in use, VeeamBR is the name.
However, this was one i exported an hour ago and the data does not match the jobnames and such.
It looks like old data.

Hmm, this is very confusing.

Edit : i tried different useraccounts as well, during the exports. Dedicated SQL accounts, local admin, useraccount. Nothing seems to give a satisfying result.

Maybe the database is messed up somehow.

Hi,

Indeed the registry is a good place to figure out where the database is. In my case it is standard: VeeamBackup and SQLinstancename = VeeamSQL2012. But there is also the VeeamBackupReporting database.

Is there a reason why you don't want to use the configuration backup and restore? (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95)

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply.

That is a very good question indeed. I had seen that one before, but never really looked into it.
I was aiming for the complete backup of the SQL database.

But if that option you mention is also going to give me guarantee in case of failure, then i will do that.
Actually i see that it has already made 10 restorepoints on the default backup repository.

This is incredible stuff, i learn more and more of veeam everyday.

THanks again, your suggestion is much appreciated!

Yes, using this option is the right way to backup Veeam B&R configuration.

Thanks,

I also made sure it makes those configuration backups to another location, not on the "default backup repo".

Sincerely,

Stefan.

This is also a good practice to ensure you always have configuration backup, even in case of a complete site loss.
