Veeam 5.0 Great product but replica features left behind

Post by Djeten »

Hello Gostev,

We're using Veeam Backup & replication for 2 years now, with great satisfaction. the Veeam 5.0 is a great leap. but I do find that "replica" feature requests we're left behind in the 5.0 release.

In our hospital (AZSAV Belgium) we use Veeam in a primary way for replication between 2 production sites. So we can very fast start a disaster recovery scenario.
We also use our replicas in this situation for backup restore possibilities. So a great solution. but we can't use a lot of the features of v5 since they are based on backup files.

There is no import feature for replica's. So if we do lose our Veeam database we can't import & thus use the restore possibilities.
There is still no possibility for replica's to start in an easy way the replica attached to a testing network for testing purposes.
There is no "surebackup" proces for replica backup. This should be a more easy proces than the mechanism for backup files.

What is also a pitty is that there is no replica & then backup scenario. So DiskToReplicaToBacup (in different locations)

Thanks for your feedback,

Hi Didier, we just discussed this a few days ago, see my response here:
v5 SureBackup & Sandbox With Replication Jobs.

Please use the existing thread to avoid duplicate discussions, if you don't mind.

Thanks!

Gostev,

This discussion issues the surebackup for replicas. And status the extra value of this feature.

The import feature for replicas is not discussed.

The testing feature for replicas is issued, if you want to start with the last version. But if you want to test a version from fex. 2 weeks ago you're stuck to failover to a particular version that starts the VM immediatly & doesn't allow a network change before starting the replica.

Thanks,

Didier

Didier, please have a look at Anton's reply that opens when you click the link he provided (one with words "As you probably noticed, there are very few replication-related new features in v5"). I believe this should answer your question fully

We are in exactly the same position preferring replication over backup for reasons discussed. We replicate all our VM's during week days in vSphere 4.0 ESX environment and during weekends run VM copies to an external usb drive for subsequent offsite storage. Would definitely like to see the new Backup enhancements also provided for replication. In view of of the surebackup feature, I may schedule additional weekend backups to verify the VM's are recoverable.

Can you advise as part of upgrades to the replication engine, could we expect to see this in the next release ?

A great feature for us would be the ability to have the Veeam server offsite and be able to perform the initial replication to removable storage onsite. Currently across the wire initial replication or reseeding takes days.
