Bottleneck Target Qnap ts-210 very slowly

Post by flamb »

Good evening to all boys.
I am carrying out tests on a nas qnap TS-210 connected to windows server 2008 as iscsi and NTFS formatted.
I have the problem that travels at 20 MB / S ... :((

Is there any way to get slightly better performance?

Thank you all.

How is your HD array configured on your QNAP? And did you check the network speeds on both the qnap as well as your server?
Do you have jumbo frames enabled?

Don't expect too much from this lowest end NAS. It has a very slow CPU, only 512MB of RAM and only one hard drive. Because Veeam doesn't do sequential reads / writes (only during Active Full backup), your NAS isn't able to give you a better performance..

And the target being the bottleneck confirms that. What backup method are you using - forward or reversed incremental?

Sorry for the delay in response.
Backup type is reversed incremental.
I am planning to change the backup unit.

I would like your advice on the model and the make and type of connection. :)

Reverse is a heavy random I/O, which your storage just isn't good at. Switching to forward incremental (sequential writes) will help.

Here's a good thread discussing backup target recommendations, should give you some hints.

So what are your requirements?
If you just want to run one backup per day and the backup window doesn't play a role, then your current NAS could be enough. But don't forget: It has just one HDD. There is no RAID for redundancy.
If you want to have a smaller backup window, data reduncancy and better performance, then you should invest in a NAS with 2 - 4 HDDs (you just have the two VMs?). That the lowest entry point in my opinion.

To plan the needed capacities you should check http://rps.dewin.me/
