Veeam job fails on iSCSI LUN that is excluded from backup
I'm backing up two Server 2008 R2 Data Center servers in a SQL Failover Cluster with two shared volumes. Whenever Veeam first ran on those servers, it tried to backup the shared volumes from the server they were currently mapped to. The whole job resulted in a failure because it was trying to backup an iSCSI volume that was mounted through Windows and not VMware. I went in afterwards and set it to only include the system disk in the backup job for both of those VMs, as I found another solution for backing up the data stored in the failover cluster. I was able to get a good backup of each node, but not at the same time. I had to fail the cluster over to the other node so the backup would complete. It continues to fail on whichever node the cluster is currently running on. My head is a bit sore from banging it on a wall, so any suggestions would be amazing.

Re: Veeam job fails on iSCSI LUN that is excluded from backu
Hi Tyler, it would be helpful to know with what error the backup job fails.

I apologize, I meant to add this originally, but got excited about my first post.

Could you please investigate the output of the following commands for any errors on failing SQL VM:
Code: Select all
vssadmin list writers
vssadmin list providers

All of the writers are in Stable/No Error states. Providers are:
Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
Provider type: System
Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}

Most likely, the issue is caused by DELL EqualLogic VSS HW Provider presence.

Non vmdk drives
[merged]
We have one SQL server with a standard vmdk which its operating system runs on. The other two drives containing log and dbs are presented directly to the OS via the MS ISCSI initiator . Is it possible to just backup the C drive or will Veeam fail to back this up. We have it selected as part of a bigger job and its failing with the error below

You might have 3rd party VSS providers installed that prevent you from having successful backup.
