Backup destination sizing estimator

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a tool to estimate the size of a backup destination.

Is there any way of doing this ? With the ability to specify VM size, growing ratio and taking care of deduplication / compression ?

Hello Arnaud,

For now the only tool to do this is "Check space" button.
It is very hard to predict growth rate, compression and dedupe ratios. Let me explain why.
Every VM is different, and these ratios are dependant on what is inside a VM (which OS, apps, how many empty blocks, what kind of data does it hold).
Also the size of VRB/VIB after incremental runs varies very much (depends on activity of VM). For example, Exchange server leaves many changed blocks, and file server holding ISO files has much less changes.

These attitudes and behaviour of VMs are poorly predictable.

Hello,

I am still in the demo mode for Veeam v6, but am very close to pulling the trigger for our VMware environment. I am trying to determine if my backup NAS device has enough storage for 14 days worth or retention of my entire environment. I have been pretty impressed with Veeam's deduplication and compression of the backups I have done across 6-7 machines, but is there a calculator somewhere or algorithym I can use to determine how many TB I need to hold my environment? Thanks.
