Rename managed Hyper-V server

Post by nrms »

Hi,

We're looking at renaming some of our Hyper-V servers to bring them in line with a new server naming convention. Servers are added to Veeam Backup and Replication 9.5 by hostname. We have on-site backups to a dedicated server, and then Backup Copy jobs to get off-site backups.

How much of a nightmare is it going to be to rename the physical Hyper-V servers whilst keeping the links to the existing backups for VMs hosted on those servers? We'd like the server names in Veeam to match the new server names, but I don't see a way to change the name of an existing managed Hyper-V server.

Hi and welcome to the community.

There is no option to rename the hosts in Veeam B&R console, so you have to re-add it.
Please try to contact the support team (probably they have a workaround for such cases).

Thanks!

Thanks. I was afraid that would be the case.
Just out of curiosity, what if we renamed the servers but had CNAME records in DNS for the existing server names; i.e. we leave the server names as they currently are in the B&R console, rename the servers and let the CNAME records link the server names?

That should work. If you DNS system is working properly and all the components can translate that old name into the correct IP address, then I foresee no issue.

I would suggest you to edit hosts file on the backup server to resolve the old host name.

Please review existing thread about similar issue. Thanks!
