Restoration times - Compression On/Off

Post by dyip »

Hi all,
Having a hard time finding this information within Veeam documentation aswell as the forums. It's common knowledge that the higher the compression level, the longer the job will take. What I want to know is, is this also true for a restoration? Will restoring files or a VM take longer, due to Veeam having to uncompress the files? Thanks.

Hi, Donald.

As always, it depends :D

Full VM restore from compressed backups is slightly faster than from uncompressed, since we need to read roughly 2x less data from slow storage in case of compressed backup.

For granular recoveries (guest files or application items) or Instant VM Recovery, the situation is opposite: compression sometimes requires us to read more data (the entire compressed block) than it might be actually required to perform the restore - for example, when restoring a single file of few KB in size.

Thanks!
