Data flow direction with roles?
Hello,
Can someone point me to an article or diagram or at least explain here the physical path that data flows during backup jobs and copy jobs?
For example, assume we have a backup management role (bak1), a proxy server (prx1), repository server (rep1), a wan accelerator (wan1).
For backup jobs you're on BAK1 and you kick off a job that backs up VMs in vCenter. Does the 100GB go from:
1. VM to proxy to repository?
For the copy jobs does it go from REP1 to PRX1 to WAN1 (if using it in job) to offsite veeam cloud?
Do things change if you have the PRX1 and BAK1 roles on the same server?
Thank you!

Hi, please review this user guide section and feel free to ask any additional questions, if required.
Regarding your specific questions:
Regarding your specific questions:
How data is retrieved by the proxy from the production storage depends on the proxy transport mode. After that data is being transferred to the repository (or a gateway server, if applicable). Backup server, if installed separately, performs just a management activity.rnt-guy wrote:For backup jobs you're on BAK1 and you kick off a job that backs up VMs in vCenter. Does the 100GB go from:

Backup copy jobs transfer data directly between source and target repository servers (or WAN accelerators, if used).rnt-guy wrote:For the copy jobs does it go from REP1 to PRX1 to WAN1 (if using it in job) to offsite veeam cloud?

Thanks Foggy.
So a little confused about the transport mode. Does direct storage access refer to hot-add where it mounts the volume inside the proxy, backs up from there and then unmounts it?
For the copy jobs do you mean in my example the data would go from REP1 (onsite) to WAN1 (onsite) to cloud gateway to cloud wan2 to cloud rep2 ? And if no WAN used just rep1 to gateway in cloud to rep2 in cloud? They don't use the proxy servers?

No, these are two different transport modes.rnt-guy wrote:So a little confused about the transport mode. Does direct storage access refer to hot-add where it mounts the volume inside the proxy, backs up from there and then unmounts it?
Correct.rnt-guy wrote:For the copy jobs do you mean in my example the data would go from REP1 (onsite) to WAN1 (onsite) to cloud gateway to cloud wan2 to cloud rep2 ? And if no WAN used just rep1 to gateway in cloud to rep2 in cloud? They don't use the proxy servers?

Thanks. The last paragraph here seemed to suggest a proxy was in play during the copy job so I was confused. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95foggy wrote: Correct.

Re: Data flow direction with roles?
Yes, since this particular section refers to regular backup jobs. Please see this one for the backup copy jobs architecture.
