Restore Testing - VM Restore

Post by Khue »

What's the most efficient way to accomplish a VM restore? This is strictly for restore testing so all that is required is for the VM to boot up and to be able to login as local admin (network will be disconnected). I last did this with Veeam 8 and I restored VMDK files to a large Windows partition and then used VMware Player to start the VM up. Is there a way to restore the VM to my existing vSphere environment without overwriting the production VM?

**Edit:** I've used Virtual Lab before, but it really wasn't all that efficient.

You can restore the entire VM to an alternative location or perform an Instant Recovery, where the VM will run directly from the backup file.

On this page, if I select the "different location" option does this guarantee that the original VM will be left in tact?

Yes, restore to alternative location doesn't touch the original VM.
