VMWare ESX compatibility options

Quick question, we are currently running ESX 3.0.1 Starter edition on our servers, and use the network backup option for our solution with Veeam. We are bringing in a new group of servers that will be running VSphere Standard Edition. My question is whether we can run backups/replicas between the different versions of ESX. We'd like to set up replicas from the new VSphere VMs to the ESX 3.0.1 boxes and wanted to be sure there wouldn't be any inherent issues using Veeam to accomplish this. Hi, essentially you can replicate from ESX with lower version to ESX with higher version, but not the other way around. Thanks!
