About specification of full backup compact

Post by Yukinobu »

Hi,

Do you know the conditions to be performed full backup compact?

We tested this feature.

We enabled compact setting(every day) to daily job on 4/11.

And first job session(after enable) was performed compact(4/11).
However, it will not run in subsequent job sessions(4/12-19).

We confirmed following message in job log.

Code: Select all

[15.04.2017 11:32:23] <01> Info [ParallelStorageCompact] Full storage compact is needed
[15.04.2017 11:32:23] <01> Info [ParallelStorageCompact] Starting parallel compact
[15.04.2017 11:32:23] <01> Info [FullStorageCompact] Checking if need to compact storage 237e4a3f-83ff-493f-885f-b8843f636bd3
[15.04.2017 11:32:23] <01> Info [FullStorageCompact] Storage 237e4a3f-83ff-493f-885f-b8843f636bd3 was already compacted. ModificationTime: 2017/04/07 23:00:36. LastCompactTime: 2017/04/12 18:01:42. Compact skipped
Checking whether compact was necessary, it was skipped.
Could you tell me the conditions for this check?
The period or merged data block size from the previous compact?

Hi Yukinobu, compact is not performed in case full backup hasn't change since the last compact (no sense in it). What backup method do you use? If it is forward incremental with synthetic fulls, then the full backup is not changed and second compact is not required.

Hi, foggy,

We use only forward incremental.
Synthetic and active full backup is disabled...

Then most likely the specified retention is not reached yet. Once the retention is reached and the oldest increment is merged into the full backup, compact should be performed. Btw, daily compact is a bit overkill, are there any specific reasons for this?

Hi,

I checked this case in our lab.
Result in, this case is related to the restore points setting.

Compacting was performed only in the job sessions greater than or equal to the restore points setting, counted from previous compacted job session.

I recommend contacting support to let them review the job configuration and compact logs, hard to speculate via the forum.
