Backing up a Server Core domain controller

Post by jhoge123 »

Hi,

What is the best way to ensure that a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller installed in Server Core mode is backed up properly with Veeam 5?

The message I get when I try to log in is "Unable to use guest agent: VM guest OS state is "NotRunning"

This appears even though the DC is most definitely running. I haven't installed VMWare tools since I assume that they need the full blown windows to run. Does this mean that Server Core domain controllers cannot be securely backed up with Veeam?

Thanks,
John

Hi John, yes - VMware Tools are required for application-aware processing, so you should install them on your Server Core domain controllers. They can be installed there (Google it). You also want them because they provide optimized drivers for virtual hardware, for example for network card. Thanks.

Thanks Gostev,

I just installed VMWare tools on the Server Core VMs and it ran perfectly.
