Backups to Tape & Files to Tape

Post by frisked »

I'm looking at setting up tape jobs in Veeam. I want to copy all my Veeam backups to tape but I also want to copy some critical files that sit on our NAS over into the same set of tapes. Is there a way to do this?

If you use the same tape media pool for the jobs, and you set it up to not automatically create a new media set when you set it up I think it will put everything on the same batch of tapes.

You would want to make sure the Backup to Tape and File to Tape jobs were not running at the same time.

If you want for the files and backups to reside on the same tape, one file to tape job pointed to one media pool will be needed.

Two jobs running against one media pool will allow you to use the same set of tapes(available within given media pool) regardless of media set creation options.

Thanks.

Hello

I recently attempted file to tape backup of a physical
client server(Dell) running Windows 2019.
Even without Veeam agent for windows installed in the client, File backup to tape and even restore completed successfully.

Is it possible to run a file to tape backup of a physical client machine successfully without agent installed?

Thank you.

Hello jessie0,

Sure, file to tape jobs can do VSS for Windows server, such should help you to deal with locked files. If you need decent application-aware image processing I'd recommend to use agent backup for that physical server. Cheers!

- Add machine you want to back up from as a managed server to the Veeam Backup and Replication server
- Create file to tape job
- Add the managed server as the job source, selecting files you want to back up

Thanks!

how do run an agent file to tape backup directly from client to tape?
Sure. On the desired server you need to install Veeam Agent for Windows (either via Veeam B&R's Agent Management functionality or as a standalone installation). Once done - point agent backup job to a Veeam B&R repository. When backup is completed you can use backup to tape jobs for the resulting backup file. Cheers!
