Backing up Exchange Server 2013 during mailbox migration ?

Post by albertwt »

Hi All,

I've got Veeam Backup Enterprise Plus v9.0 that is capable of running the backup using Storage Array snapshot on my VMware environment.
As at the moment, I'm running the mailbox database migration from one mailbox DB to another mailbox DB on another Exchange server 2013.

Source Exchange Server 2013 SP1 - CAS & MBX server:
PRODMBX14-VM
C:\ 100 GB - OS
D:\ 1.9 TB - Mailbox DB [10 GB remaining disk space]
E:\ 200 GB - Transaction Logs.

Destination Exchange Server 2013 SP1 - MBX server:
PRODMBX15-VM
C:\ 100 GB - OS
E:\ 200 GB - Transaction Logs.
D:\ 300 GB - New Mailbox DB1
F:\ 300 GB - New Mailbox DB2
G:\ 300 GB - New Mailbox DB3
H:\ 300 GB - New Mailbox DB4

So which Exchange server is safe to backup with Veeam Backup during the business hours with no downtime or interruptions to the users?
Is there any special backup configuration that I know or do not suppose to use when backing up during the mailbox migration [Truncating transaction logs].

Thanks.

Hi Albert,
Despite backup process should not harm any other operation, I would suggest to detach backup process from such activity as mailbox migration with the right job scheduling.
Thanks!

I would also warn you against backing up during migration process. Backup will freeze all Exchange activities for some time to take a consistent snapshot, I'm not sure how it affects the migration process (whether Exchange itself is capable to handle this or not).
