Super fast hotadd backup but super slow migration

Post by hasayeretFMG »

Good morning (It is morning, isn't it? I think it is... )

Strange situation: I am able to backup from a host at 130MB+ for a second using a virtual machine as a proxy (hotadd). Couldn't ask for more.
However, when I instant recovery one of the VMs I just backed up and migrating back to the host it backed up from using the same proxy it used to, it does the migrate at a 5MB(1) per second!
It uses also hotadd, just like the backup. I tried switching to NBD but I get the same results. I have "Target" as my bottleneck.
Not really sure why there's such a huge different speed-wise but I would love it if anyone can shed some light on this one...

Thanks a million!

Hi Ben,

Please can you share a screenshot of the sessions logs with the hotadd and NBD mode? Thanks!

For some reason under the history I do not see the migration to production history... just the instant VM recovery which is the first step and that only takes me a minute...
Thoughts?

It's hard to say anything without seeing session logs or screenshots. Instant VM recovery by itself is just publishing the VM from the backup file. If your backup storage doesn't have enough IOPs power, then migration will also be slow. What's your backup storage?

Vitaly: looks like we found the solution: our cache battery on our SAN was messed up. A restart to it solved it...

That's interesting, good to hear that you've resolved it. Do you have an external tool to monitor these type of issues?

I have the same issue although we are migrating from our NAS.

Hi John,

What is your NAS device make and model? Whenever you do an Instant VM Recovery and then migration to the production datastore, your backup repository is running under heavy stress (I/O). If this is a low-end NAS device, then I would not expect decent performance when running these kind of operations.

Thanks!
