Why Undo failover does not start the VM?

Post by ranjna.aggarwal »

I was testing few functionalities of Veeam Back and Replication. I did undo failover but VM does not started automatically. I want to understand the logic of this. Can anyone help me?

Hi and welcome to the community!

I assume that you had powered off the production VM before you performed failoved, is that correct? Please note, that when you perfrom a failover, the state of the original VM on the source host is not affected in any way. Therefore "undo" operation is not intended to power on the original VM automatically.

Thank you

Yes, i powered off it. But i did another testing without shutting down this vm manually. I noticed, this veeam is not getting powered off. Ideally it should be. Because in the other product VM gets powered off automatically.

But in Planned Failover, source vm gets powered off.

These two types of failover serve different purposes and act differently. If you want your source VM to be powered-off then you should either use Planned Failover, or power-off the VM manually.

During the real disaster scenario, source site is usually unreachable (because its down), thus attempting to power off source VMs would be waste of time that will impact RTO. The product will have to wait until all attempts to reach source infrastructure time out before proceeding with failover... that means at least a few minutes of extra downtime.
