Backup up VHD on SMB share SUPPORT ID 00894648

Post by blahblahblah1 »

When backing up a VM that is on Server 2016 SMB from Hyper-V Cluster 2012R2 Veeam give this error:

Failed to create snapshot (Fileshare Provider;Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider) (mode: Crash consistent) Details: Unknown status of async operation
The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation.
--tr:Failed to create VSS snapshot.
--tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.

Retrying snapshot creation attempt (Unknown status of async operation
The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation.
--tr:Failed to create VSS snapshot.
--tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.)

Is Veeam able to backup a VM on SMB share? I can take a checkpoint of the VM from Hyper-V console. Veeam is unable to take a checkpoint to start the backup, why?

Hi Jon,

First: Welcome to the forums!

Happy to see that you have a support ID. Please keep us informed about the outcome of the investigation from our engineers. FYI, the checkpoint that you take with the Hyper-V console (at least in 2012 R2) is NOT the same as taking a backup. This has changed with 2016 but not in 2012 R2.

That said. Did you added the SMB3 server to the infrastructure? (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95)

Also make sure on each scale-out file server node, you have enabled the File Server role feature "File Server VSS Agent Service"
