Best practice for setting up offsite backup in MS Azure

Post by davidkillingsworth »

We have been using Veeam for a few years to backup to local storage repositories.
We also had a Veeam Cloud subscription, which allowed us to then write local backup copies to AWS S3 and Glacier. That portion was discontinued and our product became CloudBerry Backup Enterprise. That is still what we are using to push offsite backups in case of total disaster recovery.

What we want to do now is continue using local backup repositories, but use Veeam in Microsoft Azure so that we have an offsite backup repository.

We got a nice demo from our local Veeam reseller / sales rep, which showed us how to setup a Windows VM in Azure and attach storage to that so that it is an offsite repository.

We are not necessarily looking to do restores to Azure VMs, but that would be a nice benefit if there was a total disaster.

What we are looking for is a speedy file or VM restore in case our local backup copies got compromised or were failing.

What is not clear is how to setup the connection between the on premise Veeam server and the MS Azure Veeam server.

Do we need to setup a site to site VPN? If so, are there any Veeam guides on how to do that? We are using Cisco ASA 5505 firewalls.

Also, do we need the Windows server VM in Azure + Veeam installed on that Windows VM, or can we write directly to MS Azure storage as a repository?

Thanks for any clarifications and guidance.

Do we need to setup a site to site VPN?
Correct. More details regarding Azure VPN setup can be found here.

Alternatively, you can connect your production and Azure environments, using Veeam PN for MS Azure.
Also, do we need the Windows server VM in Azure + Veeam installed on that Windows VM
Azure Windows-based VM with repository role assigned to it will be needed.
or can we write directly to MS Azure storage as a repository?
Not possible at the moment.

If I understand what is being asked, would StorSimple be an option for you?

StorSimple used in this manner is only supported on the 8000-series (hardware) appliance. This is only available via Enterprise Agreement (EA).
