REFS on remote server

Can the REFS volume be on a share on a remote server and still benefit from the same as beeing on the local veeam server?

ie, VEEAMSERVER (2016) ----> Fileshareserver with refs (2016)

Yes, certainly as block cloning IOCTL is included in SMB 3.11
