tempdb.mdf file way bigger than veeam.db

Post by futureweb »

Hi,

not sure, it might be normal, but our tempdb.mdf is 20 GB of size, while veeambackup ist 7,6 and logs are 5 GB.

Is this normal?

Thanks

Hi Patrick, yes this is not uncommon. Because we operate with the database in SQL 2005 compatible mode, many basic SQL operations leverage tempdb heavily. This should largely go away with 9.5, for which the minimal supported SQL Server version will be 2008. Thanks!

Hi,

is there anything specific we have to do in 9.5 with SQL 2014, to get the tempdb.mdf smaller again?
Running 9.5 now, with U1, tempdb.mdf is still 26.2 GB big.

Thanks

I don't have much experience in SQL Server, but from what I remember there was a compact/shrink operation you could perform on any database... have you tried that?

Oh ok, I thought it's something with Veeam 9.5, not doing it at the db itself.
Normal shrink didn't work, but shrinking the file by explicitly telling it the new filesize worked. (as it was 26 GB big, but 99 % free).

Thanks

[MERGED] tempdb keeps growing

Post by marieelieg »

Hello everyone,

I have Veeam v8 installed. The Veeam Backup DB is installed locally on the Veeam server on sql server 2012. No other instance or database is installed on this sql.

The tempdb (system db that sql creates during installation) is still growing and now is around 70 GB. I have read that this tempdb is used for temporary transactions and should return to normal size when those transactions are done. I also read that some applications fail to "tell" this tempdb that the transactions are done and that's why it keeps on growing, and upon restart of the server, tempdb should return to normal size.

I did restart the server, however, tempdb is still 70GB.

I need to know how to fix this.
Is this an issue related to Veeam 8.0?
If I upgrade Veeam to 9.5, will this issue be solved?

Any help is much appreciated!

Hi,

Update to 9.5 should help (see the posts above). Anyway, I'd recommend to contact our support team first. Once you do please post your case ID.

Thanks

Hello PTide,

No I haven't yet. On Monday I will be upgrading to Veeam 9.5. If the problem still persists then, I will open a case with Veeam.

Thanks!
