Feature Request : SQL incremental or differential Backup

Post by oshvitzon1 »

Hi ,
as i understand SQL is being backed up by VSS as full file DB every backup , there should be an option to use the default SQL server backup mechanism for differential backups and a pre-configured set ,
for example : 1 day Full Backup + 6 days differential backup.
that way backup data transferred during week days will be smaller without compromising backed up data integrity.

Cheers

Hi oshvitzon1,

Actually, it depends on backup mode you are running. In case of file level backup changed file is backed up again. When you use Entire PC backup or Volume level backup we perform change block tracking and backup only changed blocks, so image level backup provides a true incremental backup.

i mostly back up file level because of bandwidth and storage issues.
a native sql backup option would allow differential also on File level backup , shouldn't be much of a problem as it is a basic SQL script.
current situation is a full backup every time :-(

Ben,

Thanks for sharing the details. Yes, when we speak about file level backup this behavior is expected so I’ve added you vote to a feature request for potential improvement of the file level backup.
