Repository sizing and scalability

Post by johannesk »

I'm wandering,

Can I only have one repository?

It seems I will need to have a single disk hooked up on the VM running the O365 backup that is as big as all exchange databases combined. In our case that's 12TB. That might not necessarily be a problem. But I wander if it could be problematic to backup a single 12TB disk with Veeam when you backup the O365 backup vm.

Am I missing some configuration options here? How are you configuring repositories for backup up multiterabyte O365 emails?

regards,
Johannes

Hi Johannes,

The maximum size of one repository for O365 is 64 TB. That is the maximum one Jet DB can handle (which is the format where our repository is based upon). Veeam B&R itself can handle the backup of a VM with a 12 TB disk. But the problem I see is the bandwidth. Having 12 TB of data with the initial download of all mails from O365 can cause a lot of issues. MSFT has throttling on it so it will take lots of time before that is finished.

Personally, I would wait for v1.5 (beta now, GA soon) that can handle multiple repositories and multiple proxies to divide the load

My thoughts

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the infor.

so it probably wont be problematic to have a single 12TB drive.

The initial load will be spread over few weeks tima anyway, so I don't think it's likely to be a problem.

Yes, in that case it should not be a problem.

Thanks
