Instant VM Recovery in Hyper-V to the Veeam Backup Host

Post by sirinc »

We are an MSP in Los Angeles and are trying to sell Veeam to our customers on a dedicated Host. The majority of our customers have a single physical host. We want to sell them the "Veeam Server" as a backup AND Instant Recovery Server should their single production Hyper-V host computer go down. Within VMWare, there is the ability to perform an Instant VM Recovery and migrate the virtual machine back to the original location without having to perform a restore. Within Hyper-V, the location to restore the original VM to CANNOT be changed between the Instant VM Recovery and the Migrate To Production step. Thus, we are required to maintain EXTRA disk space on the Veeam Backup Appliance to perform the restore.

The End Result that we are looking for is the ability to spin up the virtual machine on the Veeam Backup Appliance temporarily until the client Production Hyper-V Host is Repaired (Usually the next day) and then perform the restore to the Original Location once the Host is back up and working WITHOUT having to fully restore the VM to the Veeam Backup Appliance.

This will give us the ability to sell to our clients a Veeam Backup Server that also acts as a Lifeboat to our clients if their production server goes down. The ability to instantly restore and get them up and running if their main server crashes is a huge selling point for us.

Hi Bruce and welcome to the community!

That's behavior by design, so you cannot spin up a VM without restoring like in VMware. Thanks!

So can we do an instant restore back to the Server running Veeam that has Hyper-V Installed?

Bruce,

Yes, you can initiate instant recovery to the Veeam Backup Appliance as a target, but without ability to migrate it to the production by Veeam B&R.
However, you can try to use native Hyper-V migration. Thanks!

Is anyone able to explain or detail why this is 'by design' for HyperV and not for VMWare?

we have the same issue - when using veeam with hyperV, you cannot do an instant VM Restore unless the production host is online - and if the production host is online, the instant VM restore does not run from the backup image on the veeam server like it does for VMWare....instead it either deletes and recreates the VMs disc on the host or it copies the VM disk to a new location on the production host - doubling your storage capacity requirements on the production host.

Why does instant VM restore work differently between hyperv and vmware? Is there no new way with veeam/hyperv to do test or real instant VM restores running directly from the veeam images on the veeam server?

Hi Gav,

The short explanation: the difference is in the components used for the instant recovery process, in VMware we can use Quick Migration/vMotion capabilities. Thanks!

Thx for the response :)
i dont suppose that will be changing or improving any time soon with HyperV/Veeam.
Do you know if there is anything on the development path for Veeam to try and make the HyperV InstantRecovery functionality 'similar' to how it works with VMWare - or a better way to TEST the recovery process with HyperV VMs without any need for storage consideration on the HyperV host (i.e. run the VMs directly from the veeam backup files)?

Really just another reason to think about a migration away from HyperV to VMWare - might head down that route.
