We are setting up a new system (new SAN, new Hardware, new cabling) and we will get a very powerful HW backup proxy (now only a VM).
Since we only have one backup proxy the question came up: why not put the Veeam server itself on this HW machine? It is also the repository, so if its down, we actually dont need the server part, since it could not do anything at all.
Also a question by my boss (I already used Direct SAN before and have no fear whatsoever):
* The document you linked says: "_[For restore operations] A backup proxy must have write access to LUNs where VM disks are located._" This means, for backup operations it would be enough to have a read-only LUN. I would sleep better if the LUN was mounted read-only from the backup1. Can we do this? Can we restore VMs without making LUN writable (via some other mode)?
Thank you for your time and ideas!

Re: Veeam Server on HW Proxy or VM?
Sure, NBD or Hot Add (if you have Virtual proxy) mode will be used. Thanks. Can we restore VMs without making LUN writable (via some other mode)?
