pre and post execution script question

Hi all,
in our company we are using pre and post job execution scripts in order to prepare our vm to the backup process mounting and unmounting a volume containing data that have to be moved to tape.
Our scripts seems to work fine except to one behaviour: we expect that if pre script returns an error the job should abort.
We set up this job on veeam 9.0 and seems to work fine but now ( on 9.5 U2) something seems to be broken. our script send the correct error code to veeam ( testified by a warning on job log ) but it's treated as a warning and the job keeps going on instead of stopping.
at the moment we are sending back 0 = success 2=error
