ZFS on Linux version on FLR appliance Case # 01796101

Post by hubeny »

Hi,

we need to upgrade the version of ZFS on linux in the FLR appliance. The current version in FLR appliance is 0.6.3. The current version in ZFSonLinux in CentOS (RedHat) is 0.6.5. Further the version which is used in CentOS support this two features

com.delphix:hole_birth
com.delphix:embedded_data

the version in FLR appliance does not support this features.

Therefore I want to ask feature request to update the ZFSOnLinux version in FLR appliance from 0.6.3 at least to 0.6.5 with support of

com.delphix:hole_birth
com.delphix:embedded_data

features.
This will help us to restore individual files from linux OS with ZFS backup.

Hi and welcome to the community!

Your feature request makes sense, thank you. For now I suggest you to use this workaround

Thank you!

Hello,

We have the same problem as @hubeny. We are using ZFS on Debian Linux in Version 0.6.5.7 and can't use FLR (case #01918592). Are there any chances, that Veeam updates the Helper Appliance?

Best regards

Not in 9.5, maybe later.

Thanks

Hi PTide,

are there chances that you provide a short "How To" for updating the iso of the helper appliance oneself?

Thanks and best regards

Such "How To" won't be short as the upgrade of ZFS module requires one to perform kernel upgrade of the iso image distro, however I noted it as a feature request. Is it possible for you to use this workaround?

Thanks

I'm reading the KB article and seems honestly a bit too complicated. I think this workaround (http://www.virtualtothecore.com/en/rest ... -recovery/) may be quicker, as you end up mounting the restored disk as a slave to the original VM. Another option is to use virtual lab and retrieve the files from the restored vm.

Editing the ISO machine is possible, but totally unsupported and a bit tricky to be done.

[MERGED] Update the ZFS Version in the FLR appliance

Post by adrian »

Hello,

In my Case #01918592 I was asked to post a feature request for this purpose: Please update the ZFS Version to a more recent one ( eg to the newest 0.6.5.8 ) so the FLR could work with current implementations.

Thank you and best regards

You've done it already by posting previously in this thread. As stated above, the feature request makes sense, but cannot be implemented immediately. Thanks.

alright, thank you for merging the request. As the original thread here from hubeny is about five month old let me ask you what you mean by "[..] but cannot be implemented immediately [..]". Please make an approximate estimation.

Thanks

Kernel upgrade is required in order to incorporate the new ZFS module into the appliance. Since the appliance contains many other modules that are dependent on the kernel version such an upgrade implies a subsequent extensive testing to make sure that all other components work properly, such testing requires lots of human resources.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kindly, don't expect it in version 9.5. That's what I was trying to say. Thanks.

Any ETA on ZFS on Linux update for FLR appliance?

It's been 1.5 years since the issue was first raised. Last post in this forum was over 1 year ago at which stage there was no ETA. A full year on, are we now able to get some kind of ETA yet?

It will be an issue for most modern Linux O/S'es, including Debian 9.2 in my case: “apt install zfs-dkms” installs ZFS on Linux version 0.6.5.9-5

Attempted FLR results in error:

This pool uses the following feature(s) not supported by this system
  • com.delphixhole_birth
    com.delphixembedded_data

Hi,
Any ETA on ZFS on Linux update for FLR appliance?
There is still no ETA, however I'm quite interested in how you implement ZFS in your VMs. Do you use ZFS combined with vRDM or you just use simple vmdk? What about ARC and L2ARC? Would you describe your setup please?

Thanks

I use ZFS purely as a file system on one single normal VMDK. I do not use any of ZFS' RAIDZ or logical volume manager capabilities, because my underlying storage already provides this (incidentally also ZFS-based).

The reason I choose the ZFS file system is its Redirect on Write design which reduces the risk of file system corruption or long fsck at boot. ext4's fsck on 20TB would take way too long!

[MERGED] Newer ZFS Support in FLR Appliance - #03294864

Post by JacksonB »

Hi there,

I've run into an issue with a POC file server we are looking at implementing. It looks like the ZFS on Linux extensions available in Debian contrib repo are a couple of point releases newer than the appliance. I'm wondering if there are any plans to eventually bump the appliance to a more recent version?

I found a couple of threads with a similar question that are 2+ years old:
vmware-vsphere-f24/u-air-v8-how-to-acce ... 26657.html
vmware-vsphere-f24/zfs-on-linux-version ... 35214.html

The Veeam support person I spoke with was very helpful in confirming the version disparity and suggested I make a post in the forums regarding the feature request.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the community,

We do plan to run the appliance through update, and I think that we could actually try to squeeze new zfs libraries there too. Unfortunately, considering that there are gazillions of other pending features and improvements, I can't promise you any ETA on that.

Thank for your request and for mentioning the contrib repo!

Hello,

I had same problem with restoring/browsing ZFS volumes via VeeamFLR (it's even worse with newest version of Veeam :().

I needed a quick soultion for this. (Veeam + Hyper-V only env). So I patched VeeamFLR ISO image with newer ZFS tools and kernel (this is very dirty solution but works for me).

Only GNU parts were changed (new kernel, modules, and ZFS toolchain).
