beginner questions

Post by mdono »

Hi,
I have a windows 2016 hyperV server with two vm's on it running both windows server 2016.
I am a bit confused on what the best method of backup is.

I could use the built in windows backup but no incremental support to network shares.
I can install Veeam backup and replication and make zips of the vm's but no incremental support in the free version.
I also could install the windows agent in the vm's. this gives me a full+ incremental backups.

If I am correct I can create a virtual machine from these agent created backups.(If I boot from the restore iso..)
So what is the advantage of installing the free backup and replication software opposed to just install the agents in the vm's?
I guess the advantage of the backup and replication softwares comes when handling bigger environments?

thanks!

Hi,

There advantages are:

1. No need to install anything inside your VMs
2. VBR can backup any VM regardless of its version/family

Thanks

hi thanks for the answer.

But vbr cannot do incremental backups where the agent can do it.
So I guess for a very small installation (2 vm's) the agent would be better if I want incremental backups and scheduling (think scheduling is also possible with powershell in vbr)?
Correct?

Yes, in your case the Agent might be a better fit.

Thanks
