Permanently powering on replica within same vCenter

Post by resruss »

Hi all,

I haven't done too much with replicas, so trying to get my head around options.

I've got 2 sites, same vCenter.
VM is at site A
VM_replica is at site B

I want to move the VM to site B permanently, leveraging the replica.

Can I:
1. Power down VM at site A
2. Perform one last replica
3. Power up VM_replica at site B and connect NICs, re-IP the VM
4. Rename VM at Site A to be VM_old
5. Rename VM_replica at Site B to be VM
6. Delete the replica job on Site A, this is the only VM in the job?

I think I may be able to use Failover Permanent, but as I haven't used it before, just wanting to see how it works and if we can just use vCenter to do the tasks this first time, testing replica failover at a later date?

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes, you can do that, just don't forget that you'd also have remaining replica restore points. Also, why won't you just use Quick Migration instead? You can also use Planned Failover just for testing purposes.

Thanks

Planned failover is the recommended way in case VM migration with minimum downtime is required.
