Dell Compellent Replay Manager with Veeam Off-host proxy?

Post by enoch »

Hi all,

As a current Dell Compellent customer we're looking at the Dell Replay Manager license to do snapshot in our Hyper-V enviroment.

Found this older guide (back in 2014):
https://workinghardinit.files.wordpress ... hyper3.pdf

We're using iSCSI and not Fiber Channel, but is this setup still supported in Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 2 (and Update 3) and with newer Replay Manager version 7.8?

We're upgrading to Windows 2016 Hyper-V.

Off-host backup with the help of a hardware VSS provider is a recommended way of backing up Hyper-V VMs, so if the newer version of Replay Manager comes with a hardware provider, you should be fine.

This setup is working here without problems. Compellent SC4020, Replay Manager 7.8, Windows Server 2016. I used the same guide.

Just got Veeam to implement with our 2012r2 Hyper-V environment a few weeks ago. Attempted to do off-host proxy with replay manager 7.8, as we have a Compellent SC9000. Got everything installed up and running and backups failed. Discovered that replay manager DOES NOT SUPPORT LIVE VOLUMES! So, if you are using live volumes, replay manager does not support snapshots on those volumes, which we use live volumes for all of our virtual environment for fail over to DR site. We learned the hard way, so now we have to do on-host backups, which takes resources away from the hosts. Just FYI.
