SQL Restore with NORECOVERY

Post by john.heimiller » 1 person likes this post

Sorry if this thread is stale....I searched for NORECOVERY and found one here and went to the bottom.
For a SQL DBA, VEEAM is really lacking...not only are the interfaces clunky ... there are few recovery options that the SQL DBA really needs at crunch time. So what if there's a limited set of vanilla options to recover point-in-time from the most recent "successful" backup. What if a daily full backup fails...what if the DBA needs to do a one-off log backup and break the chain. what if a DBA needs to recover some tlog backups and not all. What if we need to recover with NORECOVERY or STANDBY. what if we want to log-mine....where are the tlog backups? inaccessible, that's where. The options you provide might impress a systems infrastructure guy who cares about VM recovery (which I'm sure Veeam does great)...but its totally maddening as a DBA trying to use your tools and system which has usurped all the capability out of SQL Server backup and Restore. VEEAM, it just DOESN'T work (for SQL).

Hi John! For other options (not available) in Veeam you can always use native tools (store logs backup locally and then backup the entire VM), but thanks for your feedback on our current functionality.

I'm needing this functionality to be able to restore a SQL DB with no recovery.

- it will make big database migrations (moving a db from on SQL to another) much quicker. Hence you can restore the Full backup with no recovery (might easily take 60-120 minutes). Then do a log backup of the source DB and have a quick restore of the db to the new target that would only take a few minutes the most.

- by having the possibility to do SQL DB migrations this way, you won't need a scratch disk for the backup when using SQL management studio or TSQL, since you can use the data from the backup system.

please put this on the roadmap.

[MERGED] SQL restore with norecovery

Post by bubbagump »

My DBA threw me a curve ball. I know we can certainly recover to a point in time in Veeam. His challenge is, can you recover a full in NORECOVERY mode so that he can manually apply logs? The specific scenario is for pre-seeding AlwaysOn Availability groups ala here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/da ... sql-server

Is there any way to do this? I have tried to see if I can force a DB into NORECOVERY somehow to no avail. The best I could come up with is simply to create a full through native SQL tools to a BAK file like the olden days and skip Veeam all together. Is there a way with Veeam that folks have accomplished this? Even if Veeam is only used for part of the equation?

Are there any updates / news regarding this feature request? A customer of mine contacted me last week and asked if Veeam B&R can do SQL restores with NORECOVERY option.

I suppose I can share that this functionality is being worked right now, but I am not sure yet which update it will be shipped in - this will depend on a few features competing for the same dev/QC resources.
