Backup from SAN Attached Storage

Post by jochot »

Hey,

So we have a new environment, first I'll try to explain it:

We have a Hyper-V with one VM called "Server1".
This Server1 should be a Fileshare Server, so it is only used to share files.
The Storage (fsStorage) which is storing all those files (around 80TB for now, in the future up to 200TB) is connectet to the HyperV via FC.
The Files are stored directly on the fsStorage, without any virtualization or anything.
fsStorage is offline for the HyperV and directly attached (pass-trough disk) to the VM Server1.

I know that, if I try to backup Server1 now via Ethernet, it will tell me that it cannot backup pass-trough disks.
My backup Server (BackupServer) is connected to fsStorage via FC/SAN.

Is it possible/ does it make sense to backup the data from the fsStorage via SAN?
It would be easier to make a vhdx for this data?

thanks in advance

If you want to stick with Veeam Backup & Replication as your primary backup solution, the best option would be to virtualize this share and back it up as VM. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick answer.
I just googled quickly, and I saw that VHD disks can be at a maximum of 2TB.
VHDX can support up to 64TB.

What is the Veeam-idea to back up up to 200TB of data? (or even more?) As I cannot create a 200TB virtual drive, but would like to backup via SAN and not the slow 1Gb Ethernet.

If you're going to virtualize the VM you'll need to add multiple virtual disks and span across them. Another option is to install the Veeam Agent for Windows into the VM and treat it as if it was a physical server, backing it up that way instead of using Backup & Replication.

Hey,

thanks for the answer, I asked this question here: microsoft-hyper-v-f25/backup-of-large-s ... 48146.html
and seems like we have the same idea (but I wouldn't use the VM but the Backup Server)
