Use Backup Copy Jobs with Rotation Time Offset

Post by Hokuspokus »

Hi Community

we're using Veeam B&R with two Backup repositories, located an two mirrored storage devices, located at two sites.
additionaly there is a LTO-7 environment to save everything on tape monthly.

The first repository is used for a incremental backup job, which runs daily and keeps the restore points for about a month.

The second repository should be used as a kind of archive/longterm online repository, where all restore points are held which have been deleted by retention policy of the first job.
that we can use a longer retention on this repository.

The backup copy job runs daily all-time. but with this settings a have also all 31 restore points on the second target and loose space.

Is there anyway to run a rotation like

- Backup daily on the first repository, keep restore points for 1 month
- move restore points older than 1 month to the second repository, keep them with a different retention
- optional: use advanced retention policy like: keep 1 month every day, keep 2-3 months every second day, keep until 6 months weekly restore points

thanks for your ideas and answers

Hi Hokuspokus (nice nickname by the way :-))

First: Welcome to the forums!
Second: Did you look at GFS options for Backup Copy Job? (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95)

You can also look at the GFS cycles (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95) to see if one of those fits your needs.

Cheers

Hi Mike

Thanks for your reply.
I already tried the GFS settings (Keep the follwing restore points as full backups for archival purposes), but these generate allways Full-Backups and uses too much space.
there should be a setting like "quarterly full, monthly&daily increment"

Currently there's no ability to implement such retention it in a single job. Let's consider this as a feature request.
