Will storage vmotion affect our veeam backup jobs?

Post by kjstech »

We just installed a new all flash Tegile T4800 storage array. It’s using NFS just like our existing EMC VNX5200. The VNX was maxed out and also support ends this month. To continue support and add another tray of drIves, it made more sense to get a new array that’s at least double the capacity, all flash and fits in 2U of space vs 12U (and much more reduced power consumption).

We’re backing up to an Exagrid appliance which replicates to another over 100mbps wan. Currently the veeam jobs are named after the vnx filesystems. Though if we storage vmotion a few VMs from the EMC array to the Tegile array, will we have to do anything in Veeam to keep the backups going? Down the road we may want to rename the jobs, but I’m not looking to cause a huge reseed of the wan replicated backups. They are the same VM’s, just will be relocated to a new array.

Thanks in advance for any advice you have!

Storage vmotions won't affect backups except that you won't be able to run a backup while the vmotion is happening. Once it's complete it should work without issue, certainly ours did when going from a VNX to a 3PAR
