View Backup of Deleted Mailbox

Post by bob.baird.xedo »

Hello,

I have a backup job that saves 10 mailboxes and this has been running since 01/01/2018. The job runs at 22:00 daily, so right now, the job has 24 restore points.

If I remove 1 of the 10 mailboxes from the backup job, I can no longer view that mailbox via Exchange Explorer, even from restore points when the mailbox was included in the job.

Is this a bug?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob.

Did you start the explorer from the job? In that case, it is not a bug, it is by design (the mailbox is removed from the job so also not visible anymore for restores, even from previous restore points...). However, the mailbox is not gone :-)

Start the veeam explorer by right-clicking on the Organization (left window) and then you will see the mailbox again and be able to do recoveries

Thanks
Mike

Lets pretend that the job has been deleted because the license has been removed from O365 and the mailbox has this been removed after 30 days on O365.
No mailbox on O365
No mailbox backup job anymore nescessary so job is deleted.

How long will the backup of the mailbox reside in the repository?
Will Veeam automatically purge this particular backups content to follow retention policy?
Or will the backup of the mailbox just stay in the repository forever and manual intervention is required?

Thanks.

Hi Michael,

First: Welcome to our forums!
For the scenario. The backup of that mailbox will stay there until the retention policy is over. So (for example), imagine that the retention policy is 7 years. The mailbox itself holds items that are maximum 5 years old . So the first 2 years, the entire mailbox stays recoverable. After 2 year, those items that are 5 years old reach the 7 year threshold so they will get removed and this will continue each time there is an item that reaches the 7 year retention mark. After 7 year total, the last items will be removed and the mailbox will be gone.

Makes sense?

Thanks
Mike
